15 Years of Art; Looking Back!

Hey guys,

look what I found while moving to my new place.. oooold stuff! So I thought “why not do a post looking back?” (and showing it to those who are interested in my artistic evolution). I find this kind of stuff always intriguing and now it’s my time to reveal my past (PS: I am born in 1990).

Every year contains a small selection of works I liked back then (many are cropped to fit the sheets..).



As you can see I experimented a lot and many of those were scribbles while sitting in class and being bored. Back then I was just enjoying art and was not even aware of this being a real job. Those monster characters here were inspired by Digimon. On the piece with the chinese-style dragon you can see my first logo (hahaha fuck!).

This is when I started to create a series, that I was continuing all the next years. What you see here are just my favorites. One sheet of paper with one creature each, first it was just all about dragons, because I was obsessed with dragons. Those are all done with cryons. I also gave them powers and stats ๐Ÿ˜€

In 2004 I started copying creatures and characters from mangas and from Magic the Gathering cards. The worm, the sword and the talisman are my own creations – studying other’s art was really helpful in understanding shapes and light more.

Again, dragons and dragons everywhere. It was a mix of experimenting with crayons, using refs and trying to kick ass. I was so proud of these. As you can see I had a new logo there. On a side note: I was so heavily inspired and impressed with Warcraft 3 back then.. that’s when I even got into the Warcraft 3 Mapping Scene for years.

The Draconian was an altered copy of some other creature, but again DRAGONS (xD). I started experimenting with other traditional media.

This year I realized, that I need human anatomy and started to put some of it into my dragons. I was getting into darker music and this also influenced my art. I was developing my own fantasy world at that time and some friends from school helped too.

The magic year. This is when I began checking out GIMP, the first program I ever used for digital painting, but I didn’t have a tablet at that time. Those were painted with a freaking mouse. I also tried to apply my knowledge about light to my works. First time in my life I went from a pencil sketch to a digital painting. I totally was into dark strange alien creatures and started to like landscapes.



The forest here is still done with a mouse, but in 2009 I really had such a huge wave of drive. I got my first wacom tablet and started to experiment all the time. One of my main inspirations was Luke Mancini. Back then I looked at art more precisely, studied the brushstrokes and styles. I went to a school that had intense art lessons – that’s where I was drilled to do still lifes with pencils and understand light even more.

Here we go – I got my first commissions in 2009, one of them being the Leviathan in black and white. First CD Cover, first Concept Art Contest.. I was active on conceptart.org before it died and I was very active on deviantart too.

In 2011 I started out with photoshop (the one in the left upper corner was my first photoshop work). I founded the Daily Random Speedpaint Blog (DRSPB) with a small group of artists (some of them being Alex Negrea, Kueshka and my past artmates Zeitwolf, Sandro Rybak & Tim Keil ). This year also hold my first Daily Deviation Feature on deviantart and my milestone the Nurgle Sister of Battle.

One of my most popular pieces I painted this year. The Kryptica Isles (the green one). I found love for a more traditional look and got into the program Artrage. 2012 was also the year of my first Trading Card Illustrations (I was so hyped).

I got back to more intense traditional works in black and white, but also did more Trading Card Illustrations – this time for Moonga. At that time Artrage was one of my main tools of trade. In 2014 I attended the Inktober the first time (two examples being the ones on the light brown paper here) and I also continued to jump into the spitpaint group from time to time.

The Asprosophists (in the right lower corner) was my painting with the biggest time investment ever up to that point (still rather classy fantasy and part of my personal project). I did most of it in Artrage and finished it off in photoshop. It was interesting to get into custom brushes more but the moth lady (also for my personal project) still was painted old-school-style with the hard roundbrush ๐Ÿ™‚



Last year I tried new approaches and stretching my horizon. Sigil Magick and thus Sigil Art become more and more interesting but did not flow into my illustrations yet. I started to rework my personal project and came to the conclusion, that graphic novel shorts will be the solution. I will show my world building here as well.


Soo.. I hope you liked this very different post from me ๐Ÿ™‚ย  It is a long way and no magic at all. So I close with one quote from my quote collection:

“Nobody tells this to artists who are beginners. I wish someone had told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase; they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know it’s normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you finish one piece. It’s only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take a while. It’s normal to take awhile. You just gotta fight your way through.~ Ira Glass
